Late Thursday night, the San Diego Padres continued their trend of gaining better players as they traded outfield slugger Hunter Renfroe to the Tampa Bay Rays for outfielder Tommy Pham.

Renfroe, 27, hit .216 in his third full season in the big leagues. The Mississippi State graduate was the top San Diego outfielder of the first half. He had 27 home runs with 49 runs batted in and a .308 on-base percentage. But in the final two months of the season, Renfroe hit .161 and a .562 OPS.

Pham, 31, had a “down year” in his third season with 81 or more games, hitting 21 home runs and reaching base at a .369 clip. Against left-handed pitchers, Pham hit .340/.467/.478 in 197 plate appearances while hitting .248 and walking 44 times for a .326 OBP in 457 plate appearances.

Pham not only adds a much-needed on base aspect to the game but holds his teammates accountable and is known to be a leader in the clubhouse.

In addition, the Padres traded MLB Pipeline’s No. 72 prospect Xavier Edwards to Tampa Bay for Rays’ No. 17 prospect Jake Cronenworth.

The trade was finalized and made official Froday evening, adding a player to be named later to the Rays’ acquisitions.
