Padres drop middle game to Brewers after late home run - Everything San Diego

Blake Snell went 5 ⅓ frames, and exited the game with two runners on, who scored on a Tyrone Taylor home run given up by Craig Stammen, the first inherited runners he allowed to score since Opening Day.

That three-run home run would be all the Brewers needed as they defeated the Padres, 4-1, and ended San Diego’s season-high five-game win streak. Burnes went six innings of one-run ball and the rest of the Milwaukee bullpen shut down the Padres’ offense to drop them to 28-15 this season.

Jake Cronenworth and Manny Machado led off the bottom of the first with back-to-back singles, and took the early 1-0 lead when Jurickson Profar grounded into a double play. But the offense could not get anything else going.

After three singles in the first inning, the Padres combined for just five more base hits – all singles – in the remaining eight frames. Machado and Hosmer each recorded two hits, and Hosmer reached a third time on a walk.

Left-hander Blake Snell looked much more improved than his first start of the season, striking out seven batters over five-plus strong innings. He mixed in his four-seam fastball (used 53% of the time) and his slider (34%), which saw eight whiffs Tuesday night. We also saw his changeup (7%) and curveball (7%) come out of timeout a few times over the course of the night, and did not see much contact on any of his pitches.

His control also looked better after he walked just two batters. In his season-opening start, he walked three batters over 3 ⅔ frames. The only costly mistake Snell made was a 96mph four-seam fastball that caught too much of the middle of the plate in a seven-pitch at bat.

Craig Stammen took over for Snell in the sixth inning and pitched 1 ⅔ frames, allowing just two hits before handing the ball to Steven Wilson and Tim Hill, who pitched two perfect innings to keep the Padres within slam range.

The Padres made noise late against the bullpen in the seventh and eighth innings, but after back-to-back singles that did not see Luke Voit advance to third base this time, Trent Grisham grounded into a double play that ended the short-lived rally. In the eighth inning, Machado reached on a throwing error from former Padre Luis Urias, but Myers struck out with runners on the corners and two outs to end that rally.

San Diego will go for their fourth consecutive series win when right-hander Yu Darvish (4-1, 3.91 ERA) takes on Milwaukee’s Aaron Ashby (0-3, 3.49 ERA), the nephew of former Padre starter Andy Ashby, in day baseball from Petco Park at 1:10 p.m. PT.
