A.J. Preller is not dead after all.
The San Diego Padres acquired first baseman/designated hitter Luke Voit from the New York Yankees for right-handed minor league pitcher Justin Lange.
Voit, 31, is under contract through the 2024 season. In parts of five seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals and Yankees, Voit has a career .861 OPS in 351 games. He suffered through four injured-list stints last season in the worst year of his career by far.
In 2020, Voit hit a league-leading 22 home runs and had a career-best .948 OPS in 56 games. He finished second in the American League and sixth in the majors with a .610 slugging-percentage that year.
The Padres hope to see Voit stay on the field this season, giving up their no. 8 prospect in Lange. He was taken 34th overall by San Diego in the 2021 MLB amaetur draft. He had a 6.95 (ERA) in nine starts last season in the minors, although he owned 11.9 strikeouts-per-nine innings.
Padres manager Bob Melvin says that Voit will primarily DH while getting starts at first base against left-handed pitchers.
