Official: Michael Wacha to join Padres rotation - Everything San Diego

With spring training right around the corner and the first group of players reported Monday, the San Diego Padres added to their starting rotation with the signing of right-handed pitcher Michael Wacha.

The deal is initially for one year and $4M, but the Padres will have a two-year club option for $16M per year in 2024 and 2025. If the Padres decline the option, Wacha will get three player options for the 2024 season for $6.5M and the 2025 and 2026 seasons that will pay him $6M per year, per The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal.

The 31-year-old has played in 10 major league seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, New York Mets, Tampa Bay Rays, and Boston Red Sox. He owns a 4.05 career ERA across 1,153.2 innings with a 4.07 FIP, 1.31 WHIP, and 8.0 strikeouts-per-9.

Wacha made 23 starts with the Red Sox last year. His 3.32 ERA was his highest single-season mark since the 2018 and 127.1 innings pitched was his best since 2017.

The Padres had five starting pitchers before the signing, but lacked depth beyond the five on the major-league club with two of them re-joining the rotation after stints in the bullpen. Wacha will join a rotation that consists of Yu Darvish, Seth Lugo, Nick Martinez, Joe Musgrove, and Blake Snell.

Last season, the Padres spent the majority of the first half with a six-man rotation that allowed pitchers to be well-rested towards the end of the season and into the postseason with limited injuries to the top six starters.
