How proposed divison realignment could help Padres

As another day passes in the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, another day also passes by without Padres baseball. With no date for a possible start of the 2020 season set in stone, there are many ideas being brought up to the MLB’s attention.

For example, the MLB sat down and discussed the idea of a possible 2020 division realignment in order to play baseball games in Arizona and Florida.

So far, in this proposed realignment, there will be no National or American League for the 2020 season. Also, the divisions would be split up based on the geography of their spring training homes, also known as the Cactus and Grapefruit Leagues.

For the Padres, they would play in the Cactus League Northwest in Arizona, with the Kansas City Royals, Milwaukee Brewers, Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers.

If the realignment were in place for the 2019 season, the Padres would’ve finished in third, while the Brewers and Rangers take the top two spots, and the Mariners and Royals taking the bottom two.

As the Padres continue to get better with a top three farm system in baseball, the new division alignment could be great for the Padres, as the best 2019 team was the Brewers, who had less than 90 wins. With the Padres projected to win 83 games in the 2020 season in the tough NL West, the Padres could very well find themselves competing in a weaker division.

While this proposed division realignment is radical, and farfetched, it definitely is an option for the MLB. And it would greatly benefit the Padres, placing them in a much weaker division and giving them a chance to compete.

While many negatives loom among the MLB players and fans, this is definitely something to keep an eye on as more time passes without baseball.
