The San Diego Padres have reportedly reached a deal with the Boston Red Sox that will send first baseman Eric Hosmer to Boston.
The Padres will pay a substantial amount of Hosmer’s remaining $44M across the next four years, according to ESPN’s Jeff Passan. No other information is known at this time.
Hosmer has been a big disappointment since signing an eight-year, $144M contract with the Padres prior to the 2018 season. The deal was front-loaded, getting paid $20M per year for the first five (through 2022), before making $13M in the final three years.
Hosmer hit .265/.325/.411 across 4-1/2 seasons with the Padres with less than ideal defense that costed San Diego many games across his time.
