Gore starts, Alfaro moves up in lineup vs. Brewers - Everything San Diego

The San Diego Padres averaged just 2.6 runs per game in a 10-game span that saw the team go 3-7, despite seeing eight quality starts from their starting pitching. That was until last night when Joe Musgrove flirted with history, throwing 7.2 innings of no-hit ball while the offense exploded on the defending NL Cy Young award winner, Corbin Burnes, for five runs and eight hits in 3-⅔ innings.

Left-hander MacKenzie Gore (3-1, 1.71 ERA) will make his eighth career start as he looks to continue his dominant rookie campaign. Last time out against the Pirates, Gore had his best start yet, allowing just two hits in seven shutout frames on 93 pitches (and 66 for strikes).

The 23-year-old former top prospect will be facing the entire Brewers’ lineup for the first time in his major league career.

For Milwaukee, they are countering with southpaw Aaron Ashby (1-3, 2.70 ERA). In his last outing against the Cubs, Ashby threw six innings of one-run ball and struck out 12 batters. In his start against the Padres earlier this season, he went 5-⅔ innings while giving up one unearned run on four hits.

With the left-handed pitcher on the mound, the Padres will start Jake Cronenworth at first base with Sergio Alcantara making his third start in a Padres uniform, and second of the series after going 0-for-2 in four plate appearances on Thursday in the series opener. Luke Voit moves up in the order, batting cleanup, and starting catcher Jorge Alfaro moves up to the five-hole after slashing .311/.354/.489 in his last 15 games dating back to May 4.

First pitch at American Family Field is scheduled for 1:10 p.m. PDT and will be on TV locally Bally Sports San Diego or on the radio at 97.3 The Fan.
