As we move closer and closer towards Spring Training; there is word of a potential blockbuster in the midst of the baseball world. For the past few weeks, there have been numerous rumors of the Pittsburgh Pirates trying to move their all-star center fielder Starling Marte.
Marte, 31, is coming off perhaps one of his best seasons where the all-star put together a career high in runs, slugging percentage, on-base plus slugging, home runs and runs batted in. Marte has also appeared in one all-star game, and has won back-to-back gold gloves in 2015 and 2016.
One team who has been involved in trade talks for Marte is the San Diego Padres. The New York Mets have also been involved in trade rumors.
In a potential trade between the Padres and Pirates, catcher Austin Hedges, outfielder Wil Myers, Padres’ No. 6 prospect Adrian Morejon and cash would be sent to Pittsburgh for Marte.
Why it makes sense for the Padres:
The Padres can use another outfielder. Although they have eight outfielders on their 40-man roster, only one of them has a good chance at bringing the playoffs to San Diego. And the cost will be much cheaper for Marte than other options.
Even though Hedges has some of the best defense in the game, his batting average last season finished below .200, and the club has a better switch-hitter waiting for regular playing time.
Meanwhile, the team would lose parts of Myers’ contract, although that would require trading away the organization’s No. 6 prospect left-handed pitcher Adrian Morejon.
Why it makes sense for the Pirates:
This trade would make sense for the Pirates as they get possibly one of the best defensive catchers in Hedges.
Myers can make up for the hole Marte would leave in center field, or they could even move their prized rookie Bryan Reynolds to center.
Finally, they get a young flamethrowing lefty, something they have very little of in their pitching staff.
