PADRES SPLIT FIRST TWO WITH REDS IN TATIS’ FIRST PETCO PARK SERIES
Led by a Petco Park season-high 16 base hits, the San Diego Padres routed the Cincinnati Reds in an 8-3 series-opening victory. Then they fell 2-1 in 10 innings to the Reds in the second game of the set on Tuesday.
Blake Snell threw a season-high six innings pitched in the Padres’ first win on a Blake Snell start day this year. Michael Wacha followed up Snell’s performance with six shutout innings, allowing just two hits and two walks in his second shutout of six-plus innings this season.
Fernando Tatis Jr. recorded his first three-hit game in Game 1. Ha-Seong Kim hit a three-run shot in the fifth to take a 6-3 lead.
Seth Lugo and Cincinnati’s Luis Cessa will go head-to-head in the rubber match Wednesday afternoon at 1:10 p.m. at Petco Park, streaming live on Bally Sports San Diego.
LEGION WIN SEVENTH STRAIGHT IN AUGSPURGER’S 50TH CAP
Off to their best start in team history, San Diego Legion improved to (9-1) on the season with their 29-16 win over the Houston SaberCats at Snapdragon Stadium in Nate Augspurger’s 50th career MLR appearance.
Legion ranks first in the MLR Western Conference, now six points ahead of Seattle in second place and nine ahead of Houston in third. The Legion backs, dubbed the “Big Red Wall,” held the SaberCats to a season-low one try.
LOYAL, WAVE DROP FIRST HOME MATCHES OF THE SEASON
On Saturday, San Diego Loyal SC and San Diego Wave FC both lost at home for the first time this season, with Wave’s first loss at Snapdragon Stadium.
Loyal finished a three-matches-in-a-week stretch that saw a win, extra-time loss, and regulation loss. After returning from Seattle in a midweek matchup in the U.S. Open Cup, Loyal fell 2-1 in their first home loss of the season to El Paso Locomotive FC.
Wave faced multiple injuries, including forward Alex Morgan who was available off the bench but never entered the match. Wave lost to the Orlando Pride at home in a 3-1 match for the first time since Aug. 13, 2022, which also came against the Pride.
USD RUGBY WINS BACK-TO-BACK NATIONAL 7s
Over the weekend, University of San Diego men’s rugby won their second straight National 7s championship following a 15-7 victory over Clemson. They gave up just two tries in five matches during championship week. They outscored their opponents, 111-12, in five matches.
PLNU BASEBALL WINS BACK-TO-BACK PACWEST TITLES
With a four-game sweep of the Academy of Art, the Point Loma Sea Lions’ men’s baseball team clinched their second straight regular-season PacWest title with a 22-8 conference record and 34-12 overall record. Last season, they lost in the DII College World Series final, 5-3, to North Greenville.
They will host Holy Names on Wednesday, May 10 in the first round of the 2023 PacWest Baseball Championships, culminating in the championship game on Friday, May 12.
