Breaking down how to watch Padres games after Bally fiasco - Everything San Diego

After the Diamond Sports Group, the parent company of Bally Sports San Diego, failed to pay the San Diego Padres their rights fee for broadcasting games, the Padres took back the broadcasting rights and Major League Baseball (MLB) will distribute the game broadcasts.

“Diamond Sports Group (DSG) has decided not to provide additional funding to the San Diego RSN that would enable it to make the rights payment to the San Diego Padres during the grace period and will no longer be broadcasting Padres games after Tuesday, May 30. While the DSG has significant liquidity and has been making rights payments to teams, the economics of the Padres’ contract were not aligned with market realities,” the statement read. “MLB has forced our hand by its continued refusal to negotiate direct-to-consumer (DTC) streaming rights for all teams in our portfolio despite our proposal to pay every team in full in exchange for those rights. We are continuing to broadcast games for teams under our contracts.”

Diamond had previously released Bally Sports+, their direct-to-consumer platform which allowed fans to watch their favorite teams digitally on the Bally Sports website for a cheaper cost than it was for cable. However, that only includes NBA and NHL teams as they could not get the rights to their MLB teams.

MLB will now produce and distribute the video for the remainder of the Padres’ schedule beginning Wednesday, May 31 with the Padres’ road game against the Miami Marlins at 3:40 p.m. PT. Games will be available to stream for free on Padres.com, MLB.com, and MLB TV through Sunday, June 4, before fans must then sign up for a service to be able to watch.

MLB is now offering a Padres-only MLB TV subscription for $19.99 per month or $74.99 for the remainder of the year for in-market fans to stream without any blackout restrictions, which MLB says will increase the reach of Padres games from just over one million to 3.3 million homes in the Padres’ television market.

However, current MLB.TV “All Teams” subscribers will not get Padres games in-market and will have to pay for the Padres-only subscription in order to get Padres games directly from MLB.

Games will also be available on cable through San Diego Padres-only channels on DirecTV and DirecTV Stream (ch. 694-3), AT&T U-Verse (ch. 781), Spectrum (ch. 305 in San Diego, Palm Springs, Yuma-El Centro and ch. 230 in Hawaii), and Cox (ch. 4).
