The San Diego Padres’ CJ Abrams, and Eastlake High and Red Sox prospect Marcelo Mayer were both ranked among the top 10 prospects in baseball by MLB Pipeline in their latest prospect rankings announced Wednesday.
Abrams, the highest ranked prospect in the Padres organization, was hitting .296/.363/.420 in his first full season with Double-A San Antonio before suffering a season-ending injury in June.
In 2019 with the Padres’ Rookie and Class-A clubs, the 20-year-old infielder hit .393 with a 1.083 OPS after being selected with the sixth overall pick in the 2019 MLB Draft by San Diego.
Mayer, the Eastlake High School grad from Chula Vista, was selected by the Boston Red Sox with the fourth overall pick in the recent 2021 MLB Draft.
Over his four-year high school career, the 18-year-old shortstop hit .363/.515/.787 for 1.303 OPS. In his senior year, Mayer hit .392/.555/.886 with 14 of his 17 career home runs. In five games with Boston’s Florida Complex League, he recorded four hits and reached base at a .364 pace.
The rest of the Padres top 100 prospects include catcher Luis Campusano (#39), outfielder Robert Hassell III (#47) and left-handed pitcher MacKenzie Gore (#62).
