Two offseasons ago, the San Diego Padres signed Eric Hosmer to a record deal. An offseason later and Manny Machado breaks the new club record. And then Fernando Tatis Jr. broke out during the spring, cracking the Opening Day lineup.
In the past two years, the Padres have built up their infield to how it is now. The only position missing is second base, where the only battle for a spot in the Opening Day lineup lies.
Locks: Greg Garcia, Austin Hedges, Eric Hosmer, Manny Machado, Francisco Mejia, Jurickson Profar, Fernando Tatis Jr.
The infield is almost set for the next six years with Machado and Tatis Jr. manning the left side of the field, and Hosmer at first base through the 2025 season.
However, the team has a hole at second base which must be solved during the spring. The current frontrunners for that role is a Jurickson Profar-Greg Garcia platoon.
Profar hit .305/.378/.457 last season against left-handed pitchers while Garcia hit .254/.370/.373 against right-handers.
On the bubble: Jake Cronenworth, Ty France
Considering these two are ones of the few who still have minor-league options remaining makes them more likely to miss the cut. But with a good spring, either one can make it with the second base option wide open.
Longshots: Luis Campusano, Ivan Castillo, Seth Mejias-Brean, Owen Miller, Hudson Potts, Esteban Quiroz, Webster Rivas, Luis Torrens, Charlie Valerio, Jason Vosler
It’s highly unlikely that any of the non-roster invites crack the big league roster at the start of the season, but don’t count them out.
Catchers Luis Campusano and Luis Torrens have the best chances to make it as rosters expand to 26 players. The Padres may take a look at holding three catchers to begin the season to try to get more offense out of the struggling position.
Infielder Owen Miller was San Diego’s third-round pick in the 2018 amateur draft. The 23-year-old also holds an advantage over most players after hitting .290/.355/.430 in 130 games with Double-A Amarillo last season.
