Round 1, Pick 8: OF Robert Hassell, Indepedence H.S. (TN)
The San Diego Padres, who had the eighth pick in the draft, decided to draft Robert Hassell, the third at center field. He was the first high schooler selected in this year’s draft, at only 18, and is very athletic.
Robert Hassell is very good when he lashes line drive to all fields, but his swing has an uphill too. He is a left-handed hitter and was a leading hitter on the U.S. national team and hit .514/.548/.886 for the under-18 World Club in South Korea back in September. He hit .423 with 14 home runs as a junior at Independence High School. Robert Hassell is committed to Vanderbilt.
Competitive Balance, Pick 34: RHP Justin Lange, Llano H.S. (TX)
The Padres will also have a Competitive balance A pick at 34 in the draft. With the Competitive Balance Round A pick, the Padres went with Justin Lange, a right-handed pitcher from a high school in Llano, Texas.
Lange’s arm is viewed as a big upside. The 18-year old doesn't have a good breaking ball just yet, but works really good with the cutter and changeup in addition to his 100 mph fastball.
