With a sixth consecutive victory for the Sockers, San Diego advances to 6-1 on the season and keeps their second place spot in the MASL Western Division.
After forwards Leonardo De Oliveira and Taylor Bond scored first and second quarter goals, San Diego held a 2-1 lead at halftime in a mostly overmatched two quarters. The Sockers put up 17 shots on goal against Sonora’s five shots on San Diego goalkeeper Boris Pardo.
The Soles took advantage of a San Diego goalkeeper change for a three-goal third quarter to get ahead for their first lead of the match, a 4-3 lead through the first three quarters.
However, the second goals of the night from De Oliveira and Ubiparipovic, and the first of the season for midfielder Erick Tovar to jump ahead with a two-goal lead with 9:24 remaining in the fourth quarter.
The Soles tied the game again with six minutes remaining, but a shot taken off a Soles defender and an empty netter by Brian Farber pushed the Sockers over Sonora for a 8-6 victory.
The Sockers return to the arena Jan. 5 against the Ontario Fury as they play the third of a four-match homestand, their longest such of the season.
