Sunday night, the San Diego Sockers toppled the Soles de Sonora, 6-3, for a second straight home win.

The Sockers struck first at 9:24 into the first quarter as forward Eduardo Velez put the ball into the net for an early 1-0 lead.

In the second quarter, 31-year-old Sonora-native Hiram Ruiz kicked a blister into the opposite end of the net while on the power play to get back even with the Soles de Sonora.

The Sockers took the lead and extended it in the span of 2:17 with goals by defender Luis “Pee Wee” Ortega and Mexico-native midfielder Brandon Escoto.

The Sockers finished the first half with their largest lead of the night at two.

Velez began the scoring in the second half at 07:07 into the third quarter. Velez scored his second of the night with Brian Farber’s first assist to put San Diego up 5-2.

The Sonora Soles responded back with the team’s third goal of the night a few minutes later.

With a 5-3 lead going into the final 15 minutes, goaltender Boris Pardo saved all three shots on goal and gathered his third win of the year.

With their third consecutive victory, the Sockers reach 3-1 on the season, which is good for second place in the MASL Western Division.

The Sockers will face the Turlock Express (3-1) Dec. 20 on the road with their next home match coming Dec. 22 against the Tacoma Stars (1-1).
