The San Diego Sockers will debut their newest season Sunday night against the Turlock Cal Express (1-0). A year after going 23-1 in the regular season, the Sockers look to get even better and further in the postseason this year.
Last season, the Sockers swept the season series in five games. They outscored the Express 54-11 with the widest margin of victory in the third and fourth games between the pair of teams, 12-1 and 13-2.
The Sockers made many moves since the final game of last season, including big acquisitions of forwards Slavisa Ubiparipovic and Cesar Romero.
Ubiparipovic, 32, was acquired in a trade with Utica City FC in October. Last season, the forward from Bosnia scored a career-high in assists (21) and points (40). He also played with Team USA in Australia for the 2019 WMF World Cup.
Romero, who was signed by the Sockers on Thursday, will make his MASL debut with San Diego Sunday night.
The Turlock Cal Express finished last season 3-21 and in last place of the Pacific Division. They made their season opener on Friday and won in the first Major Arena Soccer League (MASL) overtime match of the season. They won over the Kansas City Comets and are currently atop the newly-founded Western Division with the Monterrey Flash.
The match from Pechanga Arena San Diego will begin at 5:05 p.m. PT as the Sockers make their home and season opener. The game will be available at MASL.tv with the MASL website.
