The San Diego Gulls fared much better than any other San Diego team Tuesday night as they defeated SoCal rival Ontario Reign, 5-4, as they began a new win streak.
Trevor Zegras, one of NHL’s top prospects, got the Gulls off to a quick start, scoring his sixth AHL goal of the season 37 seconds in on an early power play. San Diego would score twice more on seven different power plays.
Chase De Leo, scoring his 10th goal of the season, scored the second goal with a one-man advantage five minutes after an Ontario score. The Reign would score once more in the first period, and the two rivals were all tied up after 20 minutes of play.
San Diego center Benoit Olivier Groulx scored the night’s only goal with an Ontario advantage, recording his second short-handed goal of the season. However, the Reign tied the game back up in the second period to end the second 20-minute period all tied up.
Nonetheless, Bryce Kindopp and De Leo scored back-to-back goals in a three-minute span that gave the Gulls their largest lead of the night at 5-3. The Reign would get within one at the 13-minute mark, but they could not find the net again Tuesday night.
Zegras and Andrew Poturalski scored empty-netters in the final minute of play to extend the San Diego lead to three goals, at 7-4, and the Gulls walked away with two more points on the season.
The two teams will play a rematch Thursday night for another Rivalry Night in Ontario. The puck will drop at 6 p.m. PT from Toyota Sports Performance Center.
