After a five-game losing streak, the Gulls have jumped back with a four-game win streak to advance to a (16-15-2-2) record with a 4-1 victory over the first-place Tucson Roadrunners.
After a scoreless opening period, the Roadrunners struck first with a goal by Cam Dineen, his second goal of the year. The team’s assist-leader, Andy Miele, and Brayden Burke each assisted in Tucson’s 1-0 lead.
However, the Gulls battled back with two power play goals in less than two minutes by defenseman Chris Wideman and left wing Maxime Comtois. Wideman scored his ninth goal to tie the game while Comtois scored his first AHL score of the season.
The Gulls finished the night 2-for-3 on the extra-man advantage, which the team has not done often this season. Friday night’s victory was just the fourth time San Diego scored multiple power play goals in a single game. They are now 4-0 when that occurs.
In the third period, the Gulls doubled their score to four thanks to Josh Mahura’s third and Deven Sideroff’s second goals of the season.
The Gulls return to the ice Jan. 18 against as they take the trip north to Bakersfield for back-to-back weekend games.
