The Gulls struck first with captain Sam Carrick scoring his fourth goal in the past three games, with an NHL callup mixed in there. It was the 12th goal of the season for the center, assisted by defenseman Alex Dostie and goaltender Anthony Stolarz.
With a scoreless second period, the Condors tied the game at one apiece after center Luke Esposito recorded his fifth goal of the season.
San Diego’s Anthony Stolarz saved 26 shots, while Bakersfield’s Stuart Skinner recorded 39 saves before going into shootouts.
Each team scored one goal in the first three rounds of shootouts before Esposito and Jack Kopacka each scored goals in the fourth round, pushing sudden-death shootouts to another round. However, left wing Kirill Maksimov ended the divisional showdown with a fifth round goal.
The Gulls return to the ice on Jan. 8 when they face the Iowa Wild in an inter-league matchup at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
