Inside the arena for a Saturday night rivalry game between the two SoCal teams, the San Diego Gulls looked to repeat what they did Friday night after a 6-1 victory in opposing territory, but it was the Ontario Reign who came out on top after an extra four minutes of overtime and returned the favor.
Last season’s starting goaltender, Kevin Boyle, quickly became the backup in the 2020 season after the surgence of Anthony Stolarz. But lately, Boyle has been taking his opportunities to show that he is still the same reliable goaltender the team loved last season.
In Saturday night’s showdown between the two rivals, Boyle saved 33 of 35 shots to keep Ontario from taking the lead at any point in regulation play. In overtime, Boyle saved two shots on goal, but it was not enough to keep the Reign from scoring the walk-off goal.
On the offensive side, the Gulls improved on the power play, netting both of their goals on a pair of power plays. But when it came to even strength, San Diego couldn’t do the job.
The Gulls will hit the ice one more time in 2019 against the first-place Tucson Roadrunners with a 5 p.m. start.
