After returning to San Diego from a stint with the NHL’s Ducks, goaltender Anthony Stolarz got off to a rocky start, giving up two goals early in the first period. Nonetheless, Stolarz saved 24 of the 25 shots on goal and gave the Gulls a chance for a comeback victory.
Early on in the second period, San Diego center Antoine Morand scored his second goal of the season to put the Gulls on the board.
Right wing Deven Sideroff recorded his first AHL goal of the year late in the second period. The 22-year-old could not score at a better time as he tied the game with 15 seconds remaining in the second period.
Sideroff spent 11 games in the ECHL with the Tulsa Oilers earlier this year. Sideroff appeared in his fourth game of the 2019-20 season Saturday night and scored his first AHL goal and point of the year.
The Gulls went ahead for the first time Saturday night on a go-ahead slap shot from long-distance for defenseman Patrick Sieloff’s first point of the year.
With just two minutes in regulation, Colorado found the net to tie the game up and push it into overtime.
With two minutes left of overtime, a Gull since the 2016-17 season, left-handed defenseman Jacob Larrson maneuvered past defenders for a one-on-one against the goalie and he found the back of the net for the game-winner.
The comeback victory for the Gulls gave them their ninth win and 19th point of the season as they return to .500 with a 9-9-1-0 record. They still fall in sixth place of the Pacific Division and three points behind the fourth-place Eagles.
The Gulls will play their first non-division foe of the season as the Grand Rapids Griffins come to San Diego for the first of four games in the season series. Puck drop on Dec. 11 will be at 7 p.m. PT from Pechanga Arena San Diego.
