Being on a penalty kill is supposed to be a struggle for teams with a player less than their opponent on the ice. However, that is not the case for the San Diego Gulls as they scored their ninth short-handed goal of the season. That number leads the AHL by three (Cleveland and Redford have six).

Center Justin Kloos, with six minutes into the second period, shot and scored the team’s second goal of the night. The goal came with just 20 seconds left on San Diego’s penalty kill. Kloos is now tied for third in the AHL for most short-handed goal, also tied with centers Alex Broadhurst and Sam Carrick who also have two.

The Gulls ran into penalty trouble late in the second period. With 5-on-3 and three penalties at once, San Diego managed to defend their own and Ontario went scoreless for another period. Goaltender Anthony Stolarz went a perfect 15-for-15 on savings for a major period for the Gulls.

In the third period, Stolarz gave up a goal early, but the Gulls came back with three goals in the final five minutes for a 5-1 victory.

Daniel Sprong made his fourth goal of the season on the power play, with Kiefer Sherwood scoring his fifth and Hunter Drew scoring his second on the season.

The Gulls will take the next week off and return to the ice on Sat Nov. 23 against the Stockton Heat at home for Hockey Fights Cancer Night.
