The Gulls played their first day game after a night game and could not keep their win streak alive Monday afternoon, losing 3-6 in a late-game disaster to the Stockton Heat.
San Diego’s starting goaltender Kevin Boyle gave up two on the 11 shots through the first 11 minutes of the game. Boyle has struggled so far this season, saving just 84.2% of shots while allowing 4.97 goals per game.
The Gulls got on the board five minutes into the second period and 39 seconds after going on a penalty kill. Alex Broadhurst’s second goal of the season was also his second short-handed as the Gulls tied the Tucson Roadrunners for the most short-handed goals by one team this year.
With 39 seconds left on the board for the middle period, captain center Sam Carrick sniped his team-leading fourth goal and ninth point of the year. Forwards Antoine Morand and Kiefer Sherwood The Gulls battled back to get within one at the end of the second.
San Diego began the third period firing as they closed up the deficit with a game-tying goal from Chris Wideman. Wideman tied captain Carrick with his fourth goal of the year. Daniel Sprong made his fourth assist of the season.
With the game locked back into a tie, Boyle struggled again in the final seven minutes, giving up three more goals in the span of three minutes to break the tie again.
The Gulls will take a much needed day off on Tuesday before returning to the ice Wednesday night to rematch the San Jose Barracuda from Saturday night’s win. Puck drop will be at 7 p.m. PT from Pechanga Arena San Diego.
