The Gulls are one of the hottest teams in the American Hockey League (AHL) with the fourth consecutive win, pushing the overall record to 4-6 (.400) through the first 10 games of the new season.
In the first period, Alex Dostie scored his second goal in as many days and third point in two games as he has gotten into a hot streak. In each of San Diego’s wins, going into Sunday night in San Jose, the Gulls scored in the first four minutes of each game, all of which were the first goals of the games.
Team captain, the 27-year-old center Sam Carrick, kept on a rampage as he shot his third goal (and team-leading eighth point) of the season, his seventh point in the last six games.
Five-year veteran in the AHL Blake Pietila came through for San Diego halfway into the second period when he scored his first goal since a three-point (1G, 2A) performance at the beginning of the Gulls’ now-four game win streak. The goal also tied the team’s largest lead of the season (also 3-0 in the first period last week versus Colorado).
Starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz was named the second star of the game, behind center Sam Carrick, with 31 saves and one goal allowed. That marked Stolarz’s best single-game save percentage since Nov. 2, 2016 with Lehigh Valley.
Corey Tropp rounded out the three stars of the game with his two-assist performance to lead San Diego to another win.
The Gulls are now on a four-game win streak after starting the season 0-6. They have not surpassed four consecutive games with a victory since their eight-game win streak last season (Dec 27-Jan. 12).
“We’re playing the right way right now,” right wing Kiefer Sherwood said, who appeared in his 100th career pro hockey game.
The Gulls will head out to Stockton for the final day of the three-game road trip. The Heat are on a 2-1-1-2 stretch while the Gulls are 4-0 since the calendar flipped to November. Puck drop will be at 1 p.m. at Stockton Arena for the Veteran’s Day Game.
