After going 0-6 in their first six games, the San Diego Gulls swept the weekend and went into Friday night’s road trip opener looking for their third straight victory. With the help of multi-point games from forwards Alex Dostie and Jack Kopacka, the Gulls did just that with their third straight five-goal win over the Bakersfield Condors.
The Gulls got off to a quick start, scoring the first two goals of the game within the first eight minutes. Striking first seems to be a key for San Diego victories as they are 3-1 when scoring first, compared to being 0-5 when their opponent strikes first.
The Gulls lead did not hold for long as starting goaltender Anthony Stolarz gave up two goals within 30 seconds of the other to bring the game into a tie. Bakersfield took their first lead seven minutes later.
Down by one in the second period, Alex Dostie recorded his first career AHL multi-point game with his second goal of the season. Dostie assisted the first score of the night.
With under two minutes to go until the second intermission, the Gulls were down a player on a penalty kill. However, a break made Sam Carrick shoot his shot and the Gulls retook the lead going into the final 20 minutes of the game.
Another perfect period went by from Anthony Stolarz as he went 19-for-19 in shots saved in the second and third periods combined.
Kiefer Sherwood, San Diego’s right wing, took a chance with an empty net 38 seconds left in regulation to put the Gulls up two as they took the dub for the third consecutive game for a 3-0 November record.
Jack Kopacka (1G, 1A) took the second star of the game honors and Sam Carrick took first with his short-handed go-ahead goal in the second period.
The Gulls will go for their fourth straight Sunday night as they travel to San Jose for a Sunday-Monday series in Northern California. Puck drop begins at 5 p.m. PT at SAP Center in San Jose.
