Still without a win in the 2019/20 American Hockey League (AHL) season, the San Diego Gulls scored the most goals of the year so far and defeated the Colorado Eagles to take their first victory.

The Gulls got off to a hot start as captain center Sam Carrick scored his fifth point in his last five games with San Diego. Antoine Morand and Chris Wideman each made their second assists.

The Eagles tied up the game five minutes later, but just 38 seconds after that, Daniel Sprong made his second goal as Blake Pietila made his second assist, and Jani Hakanpaa made his first.

Less than another minute and San Diego made it a two-goal lead with Alex Dostie’s first goal in 10 games, dating back to February last season.

With another Colorado goal making it a 3-2 lead, Blake Pietila scored his first goal of his AHL career, with Sprong and Kiefer Sherwood making their second and third assists, respectively.

Anthony Stolarz struggled all game, giving up one goal in the first period, two in the second and one more in the third. His 30 saves Friday night was the third highest of the season. Stolarz’s save percentage (SV%) dropped to 0.889 on the year.

With a brand new game all tied up at four apiece and nine minutes left of regulation, Isac Lundestrom shot his first goal of his AHL career and first point of the season in heroic style, giving San Diego the lead.

The Gulls completed their first victory of the season and start off the new month with a 1-0 record. They will go for their second consecutive win of the year with a rematch at home against the Eagles. Puck drop Saturday night will be at 7:00 p.m. PT at Pechanga Arena San Diego.
