After three weeks and four games since the season opener, the San Diego Gulls are still winless. The Stockton Heat came into town for the first time in the 2019/20 season and took care of business, defeating the Gulls 5-1.
Starting San Diego goaltender Anthony Stolarz blocked 26 shots in 48 minutes at the goal. However, one goal in the first period and two goals in each of the second and third periods caused his third start in the American Hockey League to end prematurely.
Halfway through the third period, the New Jersey native Kevin Boyle entered the game as the new goaltender for San Diego. Boyle saved all six shots on goal by Stockton through the last 12 minutes.
With 7:23 left in regulation, Daniel Sprong broke Stockton’s shutout with the lone goal by the Gulls. It was Sprong’s first goal of the season and second point. Jack Kopacka and Chris Wideman also recorded their first assists on the year.
In their hunt for their first win of the season, the Gulls will wrap up their first homestand of the year with a 7 p.m. PT puck drop at Pechanga Arena San Diego against the Ontario Reign. It’ll be a Friday night, rivalry night!
