The American Hockey League season has officially been deemed over. In a press release given on May 11, AHL president and CEO David Andrews released the decision made by the league’s Board of Governors to officially announce the cancellation of the 2020 season and Calder Cup Playoffs.
The AHL paused their season on March 13 as the COVID-19 pandemic was beginning to impact North America. Hopes were initially that the league would be able to return to play with a modified format, alongside proposed modifications of the remainder of the National Hockey League season. The AHL took a considerably longer amount of time to officially decide to cancel the year than the ECHL, who cancelled within the week of the initial pause.
The last home game for the San Diego Gulls came on Feb. 22 against the San Jose Barracuda. Their final game of the 2019-20 season was played in Tucson against the Roadrunners on March 11. The Gulls won by a final score of 4-2 as they finished the year in the final playoff spot of the Pacific Division.
President of Business Operations Matt Savant and Gulls Head Coach Kevin Dineen met with the media on Tuesday morning to discuss the cease of play. The footage – filmed over video call – was released on the San Diego Gulls official YouTube channel.
