Last week, the San Diego Legion of Major League Rugby (USMLR) was mathematically eliminated from playoff contention after finishing their final match and completing the season with an even 8-8 record. They won three of their last five matches after a 1-5 stretch in the middle of the season.
But the league announced Friday that Austin Gilgronis, who held the second playoff spot in the Western Conference and home-field advantage in the conference semi-final, have been disqualified from the postseason due to violation of a league rule, although they did not say which one.
Now the Legion have a shot at the playoffs, moving up to the third and final playoff team to come from the Western Conference. They barely hold on with a two-point advantage over the Seattle Seawolves, who have one more match remaining in the 2022 season.
Seattle will travel to face the top-seeded and defending champion LA Giltinis in a huge match that will determine the third-seed and who will face the Houston Sabercats in the Western Conference semi-final. Their match begins 3 p.m. PDT on Sunday, June 5.
