Nate Augspurger scored two tries, including an 83rd-minute try that earned San Diego Legion the bonus point in a 29-12 victory over the New England Free Jacks.
It was not pretty all 80 minutes, and in the first half there were numerous mistakes on the technical plays. Fortunately for San Diego, none of those mistakes were costly in an otherwise dominant performance over the East-leading Free Jacks.
“Obviously there’s some things that are not quite right, some of the things around our set piece we didn’t nail today. Not clearing our own third early in the game put us under pressure,” head coach Danny Lee said. “There’s a lot of things that we can be working on, but I know this group will work hard next week to get right.”
In the opening half, Legion missed three of their own lineouts and missed on scrums as well. The second half saw an improvement but there is still lots to work on there.
Sama Malolo put San Diego on the board first with a 13th-minute try, and in the 27th minute, flyhalf/kicker Josh Henderson kicked the ball to a wide-open Nate Augspurger who easily took the ball in for his second try in two matches.
San Diego extended their lead at the 60th minute on a penalty when they elected for points, and Josh Henderson made his fourth consecutive penalty kick to begin the season. (He went 3-for-3 last week).
“We’re a confident side but we knew there was going to be a challenge,” Henderson said.
Augspurger nailed a try past the 80th minute that clinched San Diego’s fourth try of the day and the bonus point. The San Diego right wing has three tries in two matches so far in the season.
