Daily: PLNU Baseball to conference championship; Padres to face Dodgers again; and more - Everything San Diego

San Diego Sports Daily is a daily feature on everything San Diego sports fans should know for each day.

It’s a big weekend for college sports as they compete in their conference tournaments and a spot in the national tournament on the line.

PLNU BASEBALL ADVANCES TO SECOND STRAIGHT PACWEST CHAMPIONSHIP GAME

Point Loma Sea Lions baseball has turned into a powerhouse in the PacWest Conference. Last year’s PacWest Freshman of the Year, St. Augustine High alum Jakob Christian, was named the Conference Player of the Year after hitting .390, setting a conference record in slugging percentage (.884) while leading the league in RBIs (58) and runs scored (57).

After finishing the regular season with a 22-8 conference record and 34-12 overall, the Sea Lions lost to Azusa Pacific in the second round of the PacWest Tournament, dropping them to the loser’s bracket of the annual tournament. After defeating Fresno Pacific in come-from-behind fashion, they advance to the championship where they will face Azusa Pacific today at 12 p.m. in Fresno, Calif. If they win, they will play a winner-take-all Game 2 to decide the conference champion.

Last year, the Sea Lions lost North Greenville, 5-3, in the DII College World Series National Championship, falling one win short of their first-ever college baseball title. The winner of the PacWest title game will get an automatic spot in this year’s DII College World Series.

PADRES HEAD TO ENEMY TERRITORY LOSING FOUR OF LAST FIVE

The San Diego Padres finish their six-game road trip with the Los Angeles Dodgers after ending the homestand last weekend with the Dodgers. They’ve lost four of their last five games, blowing six leads during that span against the Dodgers and Minnesota Twins.

After their loss to the Twins yesterday, Bob Melvin was as animated as he had ever been during the postgame conference, saying the team needs to have “tenacity” for the whole nine innings, and not just in the early game and let the leads go by.

SDSU SOFTBALL ADVANCES TO MW SEMIFINAL

No. 2 San Diego State Aztecs softball defeated the No. 6 Nevada Wolf Pack in the second round of the Mountain West tournament yesterday. They’ll face the No. 4 San Jose State Spartans today at 12 p.m. PT at the SDSU Softball Stadium in the conference semifinals.
