Major League Rugby announced today that it will conduct it’s first ever Collegiate Draft June 13 and 14, 2020. This is a significant step forward not only for Major League Rugby, but also indicates the growing interest in rugby across the USA.

In a statement released by MLR, Commissioner George Killebrew stated “Collegiate rugby has a rich history in the United States with over 900 active teams across the country. The immense talent in our Colleges and Universities has shown itself over the past three seasons and is only poised to grow. We are truly excited about creating this pathway for the next generation of MLR players.”

The initial draft is slated for four rounds but with the option open for additional rounds if there are enough players available.

MLR will use the abbreviated 2020 standings to conduct the draft with the two expansion teams (Dallas and Los Angeles) going first. Teams will have one MLR season after the players collegiate eligibility ends to make an agreement and sign the college athlete.

Collegiate players wishing to enter the 2020 draft should do so on MLR’s website (majorleague.rugby) before May 17, 2020.
