- SDFC loses second straight one-goal match to Tigres in Leagues Cup

San Diego FC fell to Liga MX side Club Tigres 2-1 in their second loss of the Leagues Cup between the top 18 clubs from MLS and Liga MX.

San Diego sent out a young starting lineup against one of the Mexican league’s top teams after their loss in the first Leagues Cup match made their chances of moving on to the knockout stage improbable.

“We really hate to lose, especially at home, but when you put the emotion aside, you look at things from a more clear state. And I think when we look at this, we did a lot more things well than not well,” head coach Mikey Varas said.

Tigres forward Ángel Correa scored a brace in his team’s winning effort with goals in the 31st and 67th minutes, both of which gave his team the lead.

San Diego forward Tomas Angel scored an equalizing goal in the 55th minute. Angel found the deflection of Onni Valakari’s shot which went off a defender and hit the left-side gap. It was his fourth goal this season with San Diego with the other three coming during the MLS regular season.

SDFC carried that momentum by bringing wingers Hirving Lozano and Anibal Godoy into the match at the 62nd minute to bring a heavier attack in the final 30 minutes. Alex Mighten replaced Angel at the 77th minute. They were without their leading scorer Anders Dreyer after he had a red card in the first match of the Leagues Cup.

They had their chances, especially early in the first half, but Tigres had positioned their defenders well to protect against the San Diego attack.

San Diego played the final minutes with just 10 players after defender and captain Jeppe Tverskov pulled himself from the match with what appeared to be an injury. Tverskov’s exit was out of precaution and it’s not expected to keep him out, according to Varas, who had already made all his substitutions before Tverskov’s exit.

Up next: SDFC will finish its first Leagues Cup appearance with its third group stage match against Mazatlán FC on Tuesday, Aug. 5 at 7 p.m. at Snapdragon Stadium.
