- Offense breaks out with return of Arraez, Heyward to lineup, Padres beat Giants 7-4

Padres batters hit San Francisco Giants starter Logan Webb for five runs over five innings, including three in the first, as the Padres won 7-4 in the series opener with the Giants who started the night in a first-place tie with the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West.

The Nos. 5-9 hitters each recorded at least one hit as the Friars combined for 11 hits – their most since April 18, eight games – and their seven runs was the most since April 14, 11 games.

Fernando Tatis Jr. was the only Padres hitter to not reach base. Gavin Sheets did not get a hit but reached base on a walk.

After Tatis and Arraez were retired in the first, Manny Machado began a two-out rally and Padres hitters reached base on five consecutive plate appearances and took an early 3-0 lead.

Jason Heyward, reinstated off the 10-day IL Tuesday and played in his first game since April 16, led off the fourth inning with a double. Luis Arraez, reinstated off the 7-day concussion IL prior to the game Tuesday, hit him in with a sac fly to get a run back from the Giants. Machado followed that with a two-out, RBI single to give the Padres a 5-1 lead.

Xander Bogaerts added on in the seventh inning with his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to preserve the Padres’ three-run lead.

Nick Pivetta went 5-1/3 innings, struck out nine batters and allowed three runs to earn his fifth win of the season. The bullpen allowed one run over 3-2/3 innings as Robert Suarez recorded his league-lead-tying 11th save of the season.

Up next: The Padres go for the two-game series sweep and look to surpass the Giants in the NL West standings in the day game on Wednesday, a 1:10 p.m. first pitch. Michael King (3-1, 2.18 ERA) starts against Giants’ right-hander Landen Roupp (2-1, 4.56 ERA).
