- Pivetta wins pitcher’s duel, Padres win series after 4-2 home win over Cubs

Fernando Tatis Jr. and Manny Machado combined for all four RBIs as the Padres won the series over the Chicago Cubs with a 4-2 win in the series finale.

Tatis each hit RBI singles in the third inning that gave the Padres the lead. Machado added an RBI double in the seventh inning and Tatis brought in a run on a walk in the eighth inning to add to their lead.

After they suffered their only losing series on the road against the same Cubs (12-9, 1st NL Central) team earlier in the month, the Padres (15-4, 1st NL West) returned the favor in San Diego. They’ve won 12 of their first 13 home games at Petco Park.

Starting pitcher Nick Pivetta threw six innings, allowing just one run in the third inning, and lowering his season ERA to 1.57.

Pivetta had four hits allowed and struck out six Cubs batters in the winning effort.

Wandy Peralta allowed a home run to Chicago outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong to lead off the eighth inning, but finished the inning with one other hit allowed. Jeremiah Estrada pitched a scoreless seventh inning and Robert Suarez recorded his eighth save of the season in a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

Up next: The Padres begin a six-game road trip with the Houston Astros on Friday, April 18 at 5:10 p.m. at Minute Maid Park. Left-hander Kyle Hart (2-0, 5.40 ERA) will go up against Houston righty Ryan Gusto (1-1, 3.00 ERA).
