Fernando Tatis Jr. had his first multi-home run game as the Padres (14-3, 1st NL West) mounted a comeback 10-4 win over the Chicago Cubs (11-8, 1st NL Central) to remain unbeaten through their first 11 home games.
Tatis’ second homer, part of a back-to-back pair with Luis Arraez, was a part of a four-run eighth inning and gave the Friars nine runs in their last three innings at bat.
Entering the sixth inning, the Padres trailed 3-1. Their lone run came on Tatis’ first homer of the game in the third inning to put the Padres on the board first.
The Cubs struck in the fourth inning when Michael Busch hit a two-run homer after a Manny Machado error allowed the leadoff hitter to reach. They added another run on Pete Crow-Armstrong’s RBI double.
In the sixth, Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts walked with a Gavin Sheets single in between to load the bases for Jose Iglesias’s and Jason Heyward’s back-to-back RBI infield singles to tie the game.
With the bases loaded again in the seventh, and this time with no outs, a wild pitch and a two-run single off the bat of Sheets gave the Padres a three-run lead. They added on for four runs in the eighth after the Cubs got one run back.
