San Diego Padres right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. and designated hitter Gavin Sheets homered but it wasn’t enough after starting pitcher Michael King struggled to get through the first inning of a 9-3 loss to the Cincinnati Reds.
King walked the first batter on five pitches and followed that with a wild pitch before he allowed a RBI single to Reds shortstop Elly De La Cruz and a two-run homer to designated hitter Jeimer Candelario in the first inning.
He settled down and finished with 52 pitches through 2-2/3 innings, allowing three hits and three walks with a strikeout. It was his second start of the spring.
Tatis led off the fourth inning with his first homer of the spring. Sheets brought the Padres within a run with a homer of his own in the fifth.
The Reds scored twice in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings against right-handed relievers Jason Adam, Juan Nuñez and Bradgley Rodriguez.
San Diego infielder Jose Iglesias knocked in a run on a groundout in the seventh inning in his second Spring Training game since he signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on March 5.
Up next: Right-hander Dylan Cease will face his former team, the Chicago White Sox, for his third start of the spring in Peoria, Ariz. on Tuesday. The White Sox will send right-hander Jonathan Cannon to the mound. First pitch is slated for 1:10 p.m.
